Internship Notes: Last Week of Prep

Week 4

Not much to say about this week, basically, we were just making the final preparations for the excitement of the upcoming two weeks. Next week is the Summer Institute on Migration and Health in Puebla, and immediately following it we are to debut the HIV discrimination workshop.

As part of the preparation, we decided to add another page to the pre-workshop evaluation, asking participants of previous HIV/AIDS workshops or trainings. When asked whether these trainings were being provided, we had received conflicting answers. What better way to find out than to ask the health care providers themselves? Also, we added a question about universal precaution trainings, and whether providers knew what to do in the event of a needle stick. I remember that as an HIV counselor in SF that the process could be complicated, I wanted to know if providers here were well informed, or if folks here were just as confused as I was in this regard.

The other thing we did was bring the revised powerpoint for the workshop to CAPASITS (the HIV clinic) in Celaya so they could revise the presentation once again. Also, Maria and Juan wanted to show them the video that we were planning on incorporating into the workshop. The video was made by and HIV+ support group in the bay area (BANLAAD) and tells the story of real people with HIV and their experiences of discrimination. The actors are Latino immigrants living in the Bay Area, but we felt that the messages were pertinent and could be useful to our workshop. More on this when I give a deeper description of the workshop (coming soon!).
